Why a News Blog?

Have you ever stopped to wonder why some people decide to start a news blog? Just take a few moments, now, to think about the advantages of setting up one of these sites for yourself. Still stuck for reasons? Then this article will give you a few ideas on why you should start one today.

In this article we’re going to look at what a news blog is, we’ll take a look at how easy they are to setup, and then we’ll have a sneak peek at some of the benefits having one can bring you.

What is a news blog?

I hate to say it, but the name pretty much tells you most of the things you need to know. Essentially it’s a site that lets people know about what’s going on in the world around them, be that locally, or in the far wider sense of the phrase.

One of the main reasons why so many people choose to blog in this way is the fact that there is always something happening – and that means there is always something new to be added to their news blog. With so many of the large information broadcasting companies having live updates on their websites, and RSS (really simple syndication) feeds you never have to be left looking for new content.

How easy is it to get one of these blogs setup?

Well, that partly comes down to how much you know about WordPress, and some of the plugins that you can get for it.

There are a number of plugins that will take an RSS feed and add it to your blog as an article or webpage. The configuration of them isn’t too difficult (they usually have some on screen instructions), so the most difficult thing you’ll have to do is to find a news feed that you want to include in your blog.

If you’ve decided that you’re going to be running a niche site you can still do this. In the case of a niche you’ll want to find a number of sites within that niche that have an information service. If you can’t think of any off the top of your head then you can head to Google (or any other search engine you like) and type in any combination of the name of the niche, the word ‘news’, and ‘RSS’.

The other alternative, which can be a bit more fun, and helps to prevent duplicate content on your site, is to find information items yourself, and then put your own take on it i.e. you’ve just discovered breaking news in the world of yarn, instead of reporting it word for word tell the people what’s happening, and what you think this will mean to the world of knitting. If you do it right you can build up a good following of people who want to know what’s happening and what you think it’ll mean for them. What are the benefits of having a news blog?

As mentioned earlier it means you should never be short of content for your site. If you’re constantly updating your site the search engines will get interested and keep coming back to index it. If you’re indexed people will find you and start visiting.

If something is hot off the ‘press’, and on your site, then you can be ahead of the competition. What does being ahead of the competition mean for you? It means you’re going to have the blog that everyone visits if they want to stay up-to-date.

Another thing that you’ll be able to do is to monetize your site. If you have AdSense, or an affiliate product, that’s either related to the news item, or can give the people more information, they are more likely to get it through your site. Wouldn’t you be more likely to buy if you’ve just been reading about something in the news and you can get more information there and then?
